A Guide to Building The Best Deck
Decks are very popular in the United States and Canada, as they offer a great way to extend your living space at home. And Newton MA deck builders can help you build better decks that last for years.
Building a deck can be a very rewarding experience. It can also be a lot of work, but it will be well worth it if done correctly. In this guide, we will walk you through the entire process of building your deck from scratch.
Step 1: Choose the Right Spot
The first step is to choose the right spot for your deck. The spot should be level and in an area that gets good sunlight. Once you have chosen the spot, use stakes and string to mark out the boundaries of the deck.
Step 2: Frame the Deck
The next step is to frame the deck. This involves creating a frame out of lumber and attaching it to the deck’s support posts. Make sure to use pressure-treated lumber, as this will help protect your deck from rotting and insect damage.
Step 3: Attach the Decking
Once the frame is in place, you can start attaching the decking. Again, make sure to use pressure-treated lumber, as this will help keep your deck looking good for years to come. Start by screwing down the first row of decking, making sure that each board is flush with the one next to it. Then work your way across the deck, screwing down each subsequent row. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, as this can cause decking to split.
Once you have attached all of your deck boards, use a circular saw to cut off any pieces that are sticking up above the frame. A good deck needs uniform deck boards in order for it to look its best.
Step 4: Build Your Stairs
Building stairs is a relatively easy process and typically requires less time than building a deck from scratch. As the top Newton MA Deck Builders, we say that in order to build them, first, create two stair stringers out of lumber by screwing down three or four parallel beams side by side on top of support posts at one end and concrete blocks at the other end (the concrete blocks should be about 12 inches lower than where you attach the stringer). Once they are in place, lay another board across the beams at a slant, one end being higher than the other. This is your deck stairway’s tread board. Screw it down so that it doesn’t move around while you are putting in deck stairs.
Next, go back to where you attached the stringer to support posts and continue screwing more parallel boards on top of them until they reach about halfway up towards where your deck stairway’s tread board will be positioned. Make sure these new boards run perpendicular (at right angles) with respect to the first set of three or four parallel boards that were screwed onto supports earlier. Once this part is done, you should have something resembling steps; just make sure both sides are even by measuring from left to right and adjusting accordingly if necessary.
Step 5: Install Railing and Spindles
The final step is to install railing and spindles. This will help keep you safe while walking on your deck, and it will also add a bit of extra style. Start by measuring the distance between each post. Then cut the railing pieces to size and attach them to the posts with screws. Make sure to leave a space equal to the thickness of your spindles between the top rail and bottom rail. Next, install the spindles by drilling pilot holes into each one and then screwing them in place.
Factors to Consider When Building Your Deck
You shouldn’t just dive into the project of building a deck. There are some factors you should put into considerations. And the following are some of the critical factors that best Newton MA Deck builders should help you understand.
- Climate
When building a deck, the first thing you need to consider is the climate. If you live in an area with severe weather conditions, you will need to build a deck that is able to withstand high winds and heavy rains.
- Capacity
You also need to take into account the load-bearing capacity of your deck’s support posts. If they are not strong enough, the deck could collapse under the weight of people or furniture.
- Decking Materials
Another thing to consider is the type of decking material you want to use. Pressure-treated lumber is a good option for decks that will be exposed to moisture, while composite decking materials are a good choice if you want a low-maintenance deck.
